Our project was funded for three years from 2009 to December 2012, with a total attendance of 1245 at all our organised activities.
Although funding has now ended, we will be continuing our oral history recordings.

Next month (March) we will be field walking, and also hope to spend a day in Whitby Museum once the library refurbishment is complete.

Please telephone 01947 844100 if you are interested in coming along.

Recording Oral History

Five people from the Lythe and Sandsend area have been trained in oral history techniques.  Recording volunteers will start in the New Year in the Village Hall.

Learning the Basics

Group members spent a really enjoyable couple of days with a local photographer, taking photos of the same views that Tom Watson took almost a hundred years ago.  We also had the opportunity to see how a plate glass camera worked, and actually dared to turn off intelligent auto on our digital SLR's and set our own aperture speeds and use manual exposure.

We hope to continue taking photos during 2013 to record up to date images of Tom Watson postcards of all the villages in the Mulgrave Ward.

Some of our photos actually turned out OK!

Success with our latest Field Survey

We identified this crop mark in a field near Ellerby, and undertook a magnetometer survey over the whole area.  The map results from the recorded data, clearly showed an irregular shaped ditch, similar to those previously discovered around Iron Age settlements.
Auger soil sampling tests proved the presence of the ditch, but further investigations will be needed.

The difference in soil texture and colour proved the existence of a ditch
approximately 2m wide by 1m deep at it's widest point.

Another successful Exhibition

Mickleby local history group held another fantastic exhibition on 14th October.  Over 50 people dropped in to see all the interesting field finds discovered around the village, look up ancestors on old census information, see the results of recent geophysics surveys undertaken by MCRP group members and take a look at a draft of the soon-to-be published heritage trail around Mickleby to Ugthorpe.  Added interest was supplied through a display of old farm machinery and implements.

Can anyone identify this object, brought in by a resident?
